01 Hole rig basic concept
A hole rig is a technique that drills a small hole in the water and places the bait in the flowing gap, using the water’s direction so fish naturally take the bait.
The key is ‘hole depth’ and ‘bait position’. A depth of about 10–20 cm is typical, and the bait is fixed right at the hole entrance.
When making a hole, use a light metal pin (2–3 mm diameter) or a small pipe (inner diameter 5 mm). If the current is weak, place two or more holes in succession to increase attraction.
02 Korean rockfish·dark-banded rockfish habitat and hole placement selection
Korean rockfish (scientific name: Sebastes schlegelii) are active in water temperatures of 12–20 ℃ and depths of 5–15 m. Dark-banded rockfish (Trachurus japonicus) school at 10–18 ℃ and depths of 3–12 m.
Around rocky shores the current is strong, so a hole lets water pass quickly. Areas with a flow of about 0.3–0.6 m/s are most effective.
Install holes in rock crevices or where sand and rock intersect in the intertidal zone. Placing them on the ‘down‑stream’ side, where water moves from top to bottom, encourages fish to take the bait naturally.
03Rig composition and tide·temperature application method
A beginner’s basic rig is an 8~12‑go carbon rod, 0.12–0.18 mm leader, 2–3 kg test line, and a 0.6 mm snap.
Bait small shrimp (5–7 cm) or a mini minnow fixed just in front of the hole entrance. The best tide is 1–2 hours before or after sunrise and sunset, when the ‘fish rush’ begins.
When water temperature is 14–18 ℃, Korean rockfish and dark-banded rockfish are most active, so on days within this range narrow the hole spacing to 30–40 cm for concentrated attraction.
- If the hole is dug too deep, the current weakens and the bait does not move.
- Placing the hole on the side directly hit by wind causes the bait to bounce out quickly, increasing loss.
- If the bait is set too deep inside the hole, fish cannot reach it.
04 Practical step‑by‑step hole‑fishing flow
1️⃣ Pre‑trip site survey: Check the tide chart to determine water‑in direction and speed. Plan hole placement based on the flow direction.
2️⃣ Hole installation: Insert the pin vertically into the rock and fix it at a depth of 10–20 cm. In strong currents, place 2–3 holes consecutively.
3️⃣ Bait attachment: Fix the bait right at the hole entrance and give the line a slight pull so the bait moves gently with the flow.
4️⃣ Retrieval and repositioning: When a fish bites, gently lift the line to let the fish take the bait, then reinstall the hole at a new spot. When swapping holes, prioritize locations where the current has changed.
- Maintain hole depth at 10–20 cm
- Select areas with a flow of 0.3–0.6 m/s
- Use 5–7 cm shrimp for bait
- Fish are most active at 14–18 ℃
