01Breakwater fishing: Advantages of the structure and gear selection

Breakwaters have gentle waves and relatively steady currents, providing a stable environment for beginners. The risk of hitting the structure is low, so leader breakage risk is also reduced.

Using PE braided line size 1.2–1.5 (≈0.190–0.205 mm) is more than sufficient. Breaking strength is about 12–15 lb based on size × 10 lb, and the low impact of breakwaters makes this adequate.

Four strands are recommended. The breakwater bottom is relatively soft, causing little wear, and four strands give a smooth surface that maintains casting distance and guide clearance.

02Rocky‑shore fishing: Rough terrain and robust gear

Rocky shores have shallow water and strong currents, delivering bites rapidly. However, frequent contact with rocks can easily damage braided line.

Choose PE braided line of size 2 (≈0.235 mm) or larger, aiming for a breaking strength of 20–25 lb. For strong impacts, select products that exceed the size × 10 lb guideline.

Using eight strands improves both casting distance and abrasion resistance. Eight strands increase distance by 10.5 % and provide a smoother surface that reduces the chance of snagging on rocks.

⚠ Common Mistakes
  1. Do not select braided line based on size alone– Breaking strength and strand count must be considered together
  2. Using a thin leader makes it vulnerable to shock, raising the risk of breakage

03Boat fishing: High‑mobility waters and leader strategy

On a boat, water is deep, waves are large, and currents vary. Bite transmission is fast, but the leader endures greater shock, so a strong leader connection is essential.

Use PE braided line around 0.6–0.8 (≈0.100–0.130 mm); breaking strength is about 6–8 lb, but in practice attach a shock leader 3–5 times the line size (e.g., carbon 3–5) to absorb impact.

Choosing twelve strands enhances casting distance and reduces current resistance. Twelve strands give a +4.7 % distance gain over eight strands, making them suitable for long‑range casting on a boat.

04Gear selection checklist

Even with the same size, braided line diameter can vary widely; always verify the manufacturer’s measured breaking strength and strand count.
