01Understanding octopus habitat and basic principles

Octopus (Octopus minor) primarily inhabits mixed rock‑sand terrain at depths of 20–50 m. The 15–22 °C water‑temperature zone is where they most actively hunt for food, and they tend to stay in low‑current retention areas.

This species increases its hunting activity at night, making the period around sunset the optimal catch time. As light diminishes, hunting via tactile and color changes intensifies, requiring a quiet approach.

Shallower depths experience larger temperature fluctuations, and rapid temperature changes suppress octopus activity. Therefore, the 20–30 m range offers minimal temperature variation and stable catches.

02Basic rig setup for beginners

A light 4–6 ho (PE) main line provides elasticity equivalent to 30–45 kg (maximum tensile strength) per second, minimizing wind resistance. This level of elasticity allows the line to stay steady in the current while accurately transmitting bites.

A carbon leader of 8–12 ho (elastic modulus 24–30 ton, Msi 2.5–3.0) is recommended. Carbon is lightweight, conveys sensitive movements underwater, and its low friction enhances bite sensitivity.

Use a sturdy nylon leader of 0.8–1.0 mm to reduce friction and prevent line breakage when octopus moves quickly in the water.

⚠ Common Mistakes
  1. Excessive weight: Main lines larger than 8 ho increase resistance to water flow, reducing bite sensitivity.
  2. Using a leader that is too thin raises the risk of breakage under sudden loads.

03Effective spot selection and operation methods

Octopus congregates in areas with rock crevices and dense shell beds. In regions mapped at 1:50,000, look for points where ‘stone moss’ overlaps with ‘shell fields.’

Low‑current retention zones concentrate bites. In particular, areas where current speed is 0.5–1.0 knot (0.9–1.9 km/h) or less are the most stable.

When operating, we recommend ‘static fishing’ rather than ‘swing fishing.’ Keep the line fixed and give a slight shake with the wind; the octopus will sense the approaching object and increase bites.

04Practical checklist and safety precautions

Before heading out, always check the tidal tables provided by the Korea Coast Guard and the marine weather information from the Korea Meteorological Administration. Sudden tidal changes can cause bite rates to drop sharply or create hazardous situations.

Wearing a life jacket is mandatory while fishing, and all fishing gear should be made of floating materials (plastic or rubber) to prevent personal injury accidents.

If there are no bites, slowly retrieve the line while attempting a ‘light swing’ motion. Sudden movements overload the line and increase the risk of breakage.
