01What is Omorig?
Omorig is a rig that positions the sinker and jig separately rather than tying them together on a single line, so the heavy sinker sinks first and rapidly reaches the target depth.
When the sinker settles on the bottom, a jig attached to a 1–1.5 m leader rides the current and swims freely, naturally attracting spear squid.
This configuration can explore the entire depth range, unlike typical jigging, making it adaptable to various environments from shallow to deep water.
02Sinker selection and placement criteria
In deeper water with stronger currents, use heavier sinkers (25–30 go) to achieve rapid descent and bottom stability.
In shallow water or areas with weak currents, select 15–20 go sinkers to avoid excessive resistance from water flow.
Slim long‑type sinkers minimize snagging and are designed to scan the bottom quickly, which is advantageous even in rocky areas.
03Jig size and leader configuration
In the South Sea region, 2.5–4.0 go jigs are primarily used, while in the Jeju area 3.0–4.5 go jigs are common. These sizes are optimized for regional water temperatures of 18–24 °C and current strength.
The main line uses PE #0.6–1.2, connected to a 1–1.5 m fluorocarbon leader (12–20 lb) to transmit the jig’s movement even in strong currents.
In deep water, strong currents, or night conditions, use glow jigs to increase visibility; in shallow water or weak currents, use natural‑color jigs to reduce wariness.
- If the leader length is extended excessively the bite transmission weakens.
- If the jig size does not match the fish size, the bite will not be conveyed smoothly.
04Bite sensation and practical application
Because the jig is attached to the end of the leader, Omorig delivers a strong, fully hooked bite rather than a lightly trembling one.
When a bite is detected, reel in quickly and pull the hook; especially when a spear squid fully hooks, the ‘pulling’ sensation is the strongest.
Since it can explore the entire depth range (10–50 m), cast while observing tide and current changes and adjust depth accordingly. Increase sinker weight as depth increases, and keep it light in shallower water.
- Select sinker weight of 20–30 go according to depth and current.
- Maintain jig size within a 2.5–4.5 go range depending on region.
- Use a 12–20 lb fluorocarbon leader.
Omorig is an effective rig for both spear squid and squid, and it records the highest catch rates when bite transmission is clear.
