01What is Omorig and why use it

Omorig combines ‘omo‑ri (weight)’ and ‘rig’; the sinker and egi are placed separately to reach depth quickly.

The heavy sinker lands first to set the rig, and the egi attached to a 1–1.5 m leader drifts with the current, naturally attracting spear squid.

This setup can cover the entire water column, allowing you to explore shallow to deep water in one go – the key advantage.

02Sinker and egi selection criteria

Sinkers are usually 15, 20, 25, or 30 go; 20 go is about 75 g, 25 go about 90 g, and 30 go about 110 g, and heavier sinkers are chosen for deeper water and stronger currents.

Typical jig sizes are 2.5–4.0 go for the South Sea region and 3.0–4.5 go for the Jeju region; the main line is PE 0.6–1.2 go with a fluorocarbon 12–20 lb leader attached for 1–1.5 m.

When the current is strong or fishing at night, use a glow egi for visibility; in calm water use a natural‑color egi to reduce fish wariness.

03Practical application for depth, current, and temperature

For 30–70 m depth with 1–2 kt current, select 25–30 go sinkers; for 10–30 m depth with currents under 0.5 kt, choose 15–20 go to settle the rig securely on the bottom.

The optimal temperature for spear squid is 18–24 °C; within this range egi movement is active and bites are strong.

Bite detection relies on a ‘pull’ sensation. When the egi is fully hooked and pulls, a strong tug is felt; a slight tremor can be ignored.

⚠ Common Mistakes
  1. Holding the sinker lightly and extending only the egi– the rig lands late, and the setup becomes disturbed before the fish approaches.
  2. Using a thin leader in strong currents bends the egi, weakening bite transmission.

04Rig inspection and maintenance tips

Before each trip, check the sinker‑egi connection to ensure there is no gap larger than 5 mm.

Leaders lose strength with prolonged water exposure; after use, dry them completely and coat with silicone spray to preserve durability.

Use hooks sized 1.2–1.5 mm; inserting a small swivel at the hook eye reduces friction during retrieval and smooths bite transmission.

Omorig is the most efficient rig for accurately conveying spear squid bites; separating the sinker and egi to lock depth quickly is the key point.
