01What is Omorig?
Omorig is a rig that connects the sinker and jig separately so it reaches the target depth quickly. Unlike regular jigging, the sinker drops first and secures the desired depth.
Sinkers of size 15·20·25·30 are used; size 20 is about 75 g, size 25 about 90 g, and size 30 about 110 g. Heavier weights are advantageous in deeper water and strong currents.
The jig is attached to the end of a 1–1.5 m leader and drifts naturally with the current. This setup attracts spear squid naturally while delivering a clear bite.
02Select sinker based on depth and current
If the depth is ≤ 30 m and the current is light, use 15·20 sinkers; for depths > 30 m and strong current, choose 25·30. A slim long‑type sinker minimizes snagging.
For example, in the South Sea at 60–80 m depth with a 0.5 m/s current, a size 25 (≈90 g) sinker provides a stable landing point. Conversely, in the Jeju area at 40 m depth with a 0.2 m/s current, size 20 (≈75 g) is sufficient.
If the sinker weight is too heavy, the jig’s movement is restricted; if it is too light, depth is reached slowly and bite opportunities may be missed. Therefore, measure the actual depth and current on site and adjust accordingly.
03Select jig type and color
Jig sizes in the South Sea are typically 2.5–4.0 go, and in the Jeju area 3.0–4.5 go. The main line is PE #0.6–1.2 with a fluorocarbon leader of 1–1.5 m attached.
For deep water, strong currents, or night fishing, use glow jigs to increase visibility. In shallow water or weak currents, use natural‑color (transparent or white) jigs to reduce wariness.
The longer the jig leader, the more it drifts with the current; therefore, if the flow is strong keep it ≤ 1 m, and if weak extend up to 1.5 m. This broadens the spear squid’s search area on the surface.
- Under‑weight sinkers often cause delayed depth attainment.
- If the leader length is not matched to the observed current, the jig will be swept by the flow and the bite will become vague.
- Fixing jig color regardless of depth or current reduces visibility.
04Bite detection and retrieval technique
Because the jig drifts with the water flow, a slight tremor bite is not detected. A strong ‘pull’ is felt when the spear squid is fully hooked on the hook.
When a bite is detected, start the retrieval immediately; if the initial pull is weak, give a brief 0.5 s tug to tension the line, then pull strongly. This helps keep the spear squid hooked.
Since the rig can explore the entire water column (surface to bottom, about 10–50 m), monitor tide and current changes and adjust line length. Shorten the line when the current strengthens, and lengthen it when it weakens to cover the full range.
